What should we communicate to employees during uncertain times?

Reading Time: 2 minutes

When the world feels chaotic and divided, employees need clarity, reassurance, and a sense of
shared purpose from their organizations. Here’s what leaders and internal communicators
should be focusing on:

  1. Acknowledge the Uncertainty

o Avoid pretending everything is fine. Employees are experiencing stress, whether due to
global conflicts, economic instability, or social divisions.

o A simple, empathetic message like, “We recognize that there’s a lot happening in the
world that may be affecting you. We want to support you in any way we can.” can go a
    long way.

  2. Reinforce Core Values & Purpose

o When the outside world is unpredictable, an organization’s values should be the anchor.

o Remind employees why the company exists, what it stands for, and how their work contributes to something meaningful.

o Example: “In times like these, our commitment to integrity, respect, and collaboration remains unwavering. We continue to foster an environment where every voice matters.”

  3. Create Inclusive Spaces for Conversation

o Employees may have different perspectives on world events. Provide spaces where they
can share concerns without fear of judgment.

o Host listening sessions, town halls, or even quiet reflection spaces for employees to
    process events.

o Ensure facilitators are trained to navigate difficult conversations without fueling
    division.

  4. Provide Mental Health & Well-being Support

o Acknowledge that stress, anxiety, and burnout are real.

o Share resources like Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs), mindfulness sessions, or
    flexible work options.

o Encourage leaders to model self-care and normalize discussions about well-being.

  5. Encourage Constructive Action

o Employees may feel helpless in the face of global crises. Provide ways to channel their
    energy into positive action:

    > Volunteer opportunities
    > Donation matching programs
    > Internal projects that contribute to social good

  6. Communicate with Transparency & Consistency

o When the world feels unpredictable, employees need reliable information from their
    workplace.

o Be clear about what the company is doing (or not doing) in response to global issues.

o Avoid performative statements—authenticity builds trust.

  7. Remind Employees That They Belong

o Inclusion is critical during divided times. Reinforce that every employee is valued, respected, and safe at work.

o If necessary, revisit and communicate policies around workplace respect, inclusion, and zero tolerance for discrimination.

By leading with empathy, clarity, and a focus on shared values, organizations can be a source of
stability for employees navigating a complex world. How does this align with the challenges
you’re seeing in organizations right now?
