I have a theory. I think AI is about to become the world’s greatest organizational detective.
Not because it’s smarter than people, but because it’s about to uncover everything we’ve forgotten.
Imagine walking into a library that’s been growing for 25 years. Some books are brand new, others haven’t been opened in a decade. There are three copies of the same story, each with a different ending. Some chapters are missing, others were never meant to leave the editor’s desk.
Now imagine handing that entire library to the smartest researcher in the world and saying, “Tell me how our organization works.” Would you trust the answer?
As organizations rush to adopt tools like Copilot, most of the conversation is about the technology, but I can’t stop thinking about a different one. What is AI learning from?
Because AI doesn’t know which document is the latest. It doesn’t know that the policy in one folder was replaced three years ago. It doesn’t know that everyone ignores the process in the handbook because the team quietly created a better one. It doesn’t know that the “temporary” workaround became permanent. It simply follows the clues we leave behind.
For years, Internal Communication professionals have been trying to create clarity, consistency and trust. We’ve been helping organizations find a single source of truth, align messages and connect people with the information they need, and it’s make me think….
Perhaps we weren’t just preparing organizations to communicate better, perhaps we were preparing them for AI?
It learns from everything.
The good.
The bad.
The outdated.
The duplicated.
The forgotten.
So maybe the first question isn’t, “Are we ready for AI?”
Maybe it’s, “Is our information ready for AI?”
I have a feeling that’s the mystery many organizations haven’t realized they’re about to solve.
