If you want to get something done, ask a busy person. I think the same is true about success.
If you want to understand who will succeed, look at who is willing to invest in themselves.
I’m always surprised by how many people are eager to take in free content, free advice, free access…but hesitate when it comes to putting something on the line.
🕰️ Time.
⚡ Energy.
💲 Money.
Because here’s the truth we don’t talk about enough…success is deeply connected to self-worth. If you don’t believe you’re worth the investment, why should anyone else?
Early in my career, I didn’t wait for permission. I paid for my own professional membership. I volunteered to get access to rooms I wasn’t invited into yet.
In my first two roles, when employers said no, I paid my own way.
By my third job, before I turned 30, professional development wasn’t a request, it was a negotiation and everything changed. For the next 15 years, my employers invested in me: Memberships. Conferences. Travel. Speaking.
And for the last 12 years as an entrepreneur, I’ve gone back to investing in myself again: Speaking. Volunteering. Showing up. Budgeting for growth.
And that investment has come back in ways you can’t always predict:
– Clients.
– Community.
– Recognition.
– Sponsorships.
– Opportunities.
Not because it was free, but because it was intentional.
We have to be willing to invest in ourselves before we expect others to invest in us. Free can spark awareness, but investment drives transformation and I think that is true for everything in our lives.
So the question is: Are you consuming… or are you committing?
